In 2010, Aston Martin embarked on creating the world’s most beautiful four-door, high-performance sports saloon and as a result the Aston Martin Rapide was introduced. Autocar reviewers noted that Aston Martin should be rightly proud of the Rapide claiming it to be one of the most elegant four-door sports cars in the world with top-notch build quality.
The Rapide became the successor to the 1960’s Lagonda Rapide which was discontinued in 1990. The Rapide was effectively a DB9 but with a stretched design to accommodate the rear doors, with the rear wings' curvaceous design preventing the car from being perceived as stretched.
A tilt-telescopic steering wheel, Bi-Xenon headlamps - which were later embedded into the second-generation Vanquish - and LED tail lights came as standard on the Rapide.
Powered by a hand-built 5.9 litre V12 engine providing effortless power, the Rapide has a whopping 480 bhp. It can attain top speeds of up to 188 mph and 0-60 mph is an impressive 5.2 seconds.
A specifically tuned six-speed Touchtronic transmission allows drivers to shift between park, drive, neutral and reverse serving slicker shifts and a smoother drive experience. Additionally, with a push of a button, sport mode can quickly turn the Rapide into a proper sports car with sharper gear changes, steering and throttle responses plus the addition of high-tech adaptive dampers helps deliver remarkable agility.
In 2013 and 2014 the Rapide receive a facelift and was renamed the Rapide S. An upgrade to the V12 engine increased the horsepower from 480 bhp to 552 bhp and performance improved with a top speed of over 200 mph and a 0-60 mph sprint in just 4.4 seconds. A significant visual difference is the hand-machined aluminium full-face grille giving the Rapide S a strikingly unique front profile.
A high-performance Rapide variant was unveiled in 2018 named the Rapide AMR with new calibration software and better airflow to the engine giving the AMR 595 bhp and a top speed of 205 mph. Fitted with Michelin Pilot Supersport tyres and huge 21-inch alloy wheels, the AMR had the biggest wheels fitted to an Aston Martin at the time.
