"Understanding Forward Mounted Shocks (how to do it)" by Don Girard (1975).

The author got interested in motorcycles when the long travel rear suspension boom was starting. He used to race sports cars and suspension was his primary interest. Girard is an engineer, and after reading everything he could he found he still hadn't come across sufficient information on motorcycle suspensions. He sat down and figured it all out for himself, using his race car background, and wrote/published this 57 page book. He has all the math you will need to calculate wheel rate, spring rates, preload, etc. Even though he is discussing long travel rear suspension, everything is applicable to motorcycle rear suspensions in general. The book was written before the linkage suspensions came out, but will still be relevant to those types of suspension.

I've had a copy of the book since about 1983. I've found the book very informative, and written well enough that I can get through the math, (though you will want to have a pocket calculator handy).. Since I've seen the interest many of you have in things technical I contacted Girard and obtained his remaining supply.

Note: I've sold all the copies of the book that were originally printed by Don Girard. I have received Don's permission to reprint the book. I've scanned and OCR'd the book, and am working on redoing all the formatting, typefaces, formulae, etc in the book prior to reprinting. This is not happening overnight, especially as I'm quit busy getting ready for the start of a new race season. With luck, I should be able to have a new printing available towards the middle of 2001

I'm selling the books for $16.00 prepaid which includes first-class postage in the United States.

Foreign orders will need to add extra postage and pay with an international money order or US currency:
