First published in 1984 this book very quickly became considered as the standard reference text.
It was reprinted many times, lastly in 1998 but then quickly sold out. Written at a level to be comprehensible to the average reader it was also sufficiently detailed to be of interest to students and engineers.

It was rewritten as of March 2002 to bring it up-to-date and introduce a wealth of additional material, and has over five times the content of the original. 510 information packed pages. Foreword written by Kevin Cameron.
