Ferrari 208: Bertone's 2+2 vs. Pininfarina's Sleek 2-Seater - A Tale of Two Styles

The Ferrari 208 was produced from 1980 to 1982 with two models; the Ferrari 208 GT4 - a Bertone styled 2+2, and the Ferrari 208 GTB/GTS - a Pininfarina styled 2-seater. The latter was offered with a turbocharged engine. Both variants hit a top speed of 134 mph and accelerated 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds.

The Ferrari 208 GT4 was essentially a 308 GT4 but with a lower-displacement 2.0 liter engine, which made the 208 GT4 the smallest production V8 in history for a road vehicle, and other modifications included smaller Weber carburettors, a lower drive ratio and thinner tyres.

The 2.0 liter 208 GT4 was succeeded by the 208 GTB and the 208 GTS, and were mainly for the domestic Italian market. At the time, any cars with engines over 2 liters were subjected to a higher tax rate. The 208 GTB and GTS kept the tax at the standard 18%, instead of the 38% it would have been if fitted with a larger engine.

Although faster than the original 208 GT4, the 208 GTB and GTS were regarded as the slowest Ferrari ever made!

In addition to either a 208 GTB badge, or a 208 GTS badge on the rear fascia, the new model was identifiable by way of its single exhaust outlet, whereas the similar 308 GTBi and GTSi used a four-pipe system.

The year 1982 saw the release of a turbocharged, fuel injected version of the 208, known as the 208 GTB Turbo, which became the first ever turbocharged road going Ferrari. The design was near on identical to the Ferrari 308 Quattrovalvole, but was fitted as standard with a deep front spoiler and black roof aileron, (“little wing”), which were optional extras on the 308 Quattrovalvole.
