350 GT: The Dawn of Lamborghini's Supercar Legacy

Back in the sixties, Ferruccio Lamborghini teamed up with some of Italy’s finest designers and engineers to build a car that would not only challenge Ferrari - but surpass it. The result? The 350 GT, Lamborghini’s first production model and the beginning of a legacy.

The public first caught a glimpse of Ferruccio’s creation in 1963 at the Turin Auto Show. The prototype, named the 350 GTV, wowed the crowd with its sharp design and bold ambition. With the help of Alfa Romeo design expert Carlo Anderloni, the GTV was refined and transformed into the more elegant 350 GT, which officially launched for sale in 1964.

Built as a true grand tourer, the 350 GT combined long-distance comfort with razor-sharp performance. Underneath its sleek aluminum body - crafted using Carrozzeria Touring’s famed Superleggera method - lay serious engineering: a front-mounted 3.5-liter V12, independent suspension all around, four-wheel disc brakes, and even a limited-slip differential on select models. These weren’t just impressive specs, they were a clear signal that Lamborghini had arrived as a true rival to Ferrari.

Notably, changes from the original prototype included replacing pop-up headlamps with fixed Cibie units and streamlining the chassis to enhance elegance and aerodynamics. Just 13 of these V12-powered machines were built in the first year, but once word spread in the press and among car enthusiasts, production increased. Over 100 examples were eventually made, each one practically hand-built with various updates over time, including dashboard tweaks and new cowl air intakes.

Although never mass-produced, Lamborghini also revealed two stunning roadster variants dubbed the 350 GTS - proof of the brand’s early appetite for experimentation.

In 1966, the 350 GT was succeeded by the 4-liter 400 GT, a refined two-seater that built upon its predecessor’s strengths. That same year, Lamborghini introduced the 400 GT 2+2 - a larger variant designed to offer additional passenger space without compromising the brand’s signature style or performance. This marked the next step in Lamborghini’s evolution, blending grand touring comfort with supercar presence.

Today, the original 350 GT stands as a rare and important classic. It didn’t just mark Lamborghini’s first step, it set the tone for everything that followed, from the Miura and Countach to the Aventador and beyond.
