The Maserati Ghibli: Grand Touring Elegance and Power

The Ghibli was a true thoroughbred grand tourer with a 2+2 seat configuration. Produced from 1967 to 1973, its name translates to “Mediterranean wind.”

Powered by the same 4.7-liter V8 engine found in the Quattroporte and Mexico, the Ghibli combined style and substance. Its long bonnet and low-slung silhouette gave it a sleek, aerodynamic presence that was unmistakably Italian.

With 330 hp on tap, performance was strong - 0 to 60 mph in under seven seconds, and a top speed of 164 mph. In 1969, Maserati introduced the Ghibli SS (“Super Sport”) with a larger 4.9-liter engine and added a Spyder version to the lineup.

The SS pushed output to 335 hp, increasing top speed to around 175 mph and dropping the 0-60 time to just over six seconds. Alongside the added power, the SS also brought sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and a more assertive aesthetic.

The Ghibli was well-received by critics and enthusiasts alike, with 1,170 coupes and 125 Spyders produced.

In addition to its striking looks, the Ghibli’s engineering reflected Maserati’s racing DNA. A dry-sump lubrication system allowed the V8 to sit lower in the chassis, helping to achieve that shark-like profile while enhancing high-speed stability and handling - key traits for any true gran turismo.

Yet behind its elegance lay a charming inconsistency. Maserati implemented numerous running changes throughout production, some for compliance, others for refinement, resulting in wide variation between individual cars. For collectors, this lack of standardization can be a challenge; for purists, it’s part of the Ghibli’s mystique and allure.
