The Secondary Air Injection (SAI) pump is an electric unit that helps keep emissions clean during cold starts. The engine’s computer switches it on for a short time to push fresh air into the exhaust, helping the catalytic converters heat up quickly so they can do their job sooner and cut pollution.

When this system fails, the car usually drives normally once warm, but you may see a warning light, notice a slightly rough cold start, or hear a loud whine and some grinding on start-up. If you replace the pump, also check/renew the hoses and clamps, make sure the one-way valve isn’t leaking moisture back into the pump, and clear the light after a successful cold start - otherwise you risk an MOT test fail.
