A Legacy of Performance and Style: The Porsche 911

Introduced to the roads in 1964 from Stuttgart, Germany; the Porsche 911 became one of the most cherished classics in the world. It was developed as a more powerful, larger and more comfortable successor to Porsche's first model, the Porsche 356, with rear-mounted six-flat engines - which were air-cooled until the 996 series in 1998 - and a torsion bar suspension.

Selling almost 200,000 vehicles and becoming the longest-running 911 series, the “G model” was produced from 1973 to 1989. In addition to a Coupé and a Targa version, a Cabriolet was also available. The base 911 model had a 2.7 liter flat-six engine, with 150 hp that increased to 165 hp in 1976. The 911 S delivered an output of 175 hp.

The defining 911 of this era came in 1974, the original 911 Turbo. The 911 Turbo had a 260 hp engine and a wicked new spoiler. With its unique combination of luxury and beastly power, the “Turbo” became a pinnacle of the Porsche brand. The Turbo got an exciting update in 1977 when power jumped to 300 hp from a bigger 3.3 liter air-cooled engine. Easily the most powerful and high-performance car in its class, this model further enhanced the 911 legendary status.

The 911 roots are traced back to sketches drawn by Butzi Porsche, son of Mr Ferry Porsche himself, and records show that Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, son of Butzi, designed the Porsche 911 in the early 1960s. However, in recent years this has been disputed by heirs of Erwin Komenda, the designer of the Porsche 365, claiming Komenda also penned the 911. The argument has been rejected in court twice previously, but the theory still continues and it has been reported that another hearing will be held at some point in the future.
