The Porsche 918 Spyder is a mid-engine plug-in hybrid powered by a naturally aspirated 4.6 liter V8 engine and two electric motors. Only 918 units were produced between 2013-2015.
There was much interest in the 918 Spyder, and given its limited numbers, every unit was sold with buyers not being discouraged by the $845,000 price tag, add another $100,000 or so for optional extras.
The styling was sleek and futuristic with its aerodynamic shape, air intakes and rear spoiler. Featuring a lot of carbon fiber parts meant the chassis was lightweight and combined with its all-wheel drive and total power output of 875 horsepower meant that performance was hypercar level right up there with the Bugatti, Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren.
Achieving a time of 6:57 minutes for a lap of the Nürburgring, smashing the previous record of seven minutes, the 918 Spyder 0-60 mph was around 2.2 seconds and had a top speed of 214 mph.
When looking at the rear you would be forgiven for thinking that this is not a Porsche as it does indeed look like a hypercar from the future. Look closely and between the rear lights and huge spoiler is the iconic PORSCHE nameplate.
The exhausts are located at the top of the car on the roof behind the cockpit as engineers released that benefits would include weight reduction, thermodynamic air channelling, reduced back pressure, and improved aerodynamics.
