Mechanical Excellence: A Testament to Porsche's Legacy
Not only was the 997 incredible to look at, but the mechanical improvements took it to another level; with highly reliable transmissions, durable suspension and bodywork, as well as excellent brake systems, there is little to fault about this model.
All first generation 997 models were complete with an uprated performance; a 3.6 liter, 321 hp engine for the Carrera and a 3.8 liter, 355 hp for the Carrera S as well as both five or six-speed Tiptronic transmission, and assisted steering and brakes.
The second generation made several improvements to the first, including a power increase - with the 3.6 liter engine producing 345 hp, and the S model 3.8 liter producing 365 hp. The suspension was improved and the styling was slightly touched up with a new front bumper. They also featured direct injection, and a 7-speed PDK clutch transmission, making them faster, lighter and more fuel-efficient than previous models.
Variants included the 997 C2 and C4 Coupe and Cabriolet, which for the first time were virtually on par with their counterparts’ performance figures. We also saw the 997 Targa, which included glass roof systems, as well as the 997 GT3 - a racing version, which was surprisingly usable for everyday drivers due to its "zero lift" aerodynamic design.
