The Boxster Spyder 981 is a high-performance, track-focused variant of the Boxster 981 and was a limited-production model with just under 2,500 units produced since its release in 2015.
Powered by a 3.8 liter flat-6 engine, which is also found in the Cayman GT4 and 911 Carrera S, with an output of 375 horsepower, the Spyder could hit a top speed of 180 mph and perform a 0-60 mph sprint in under 4.5 seconds.
Only available with a 6-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, the Spyders’ performance was in part credited to its clever use of lightweight construction such as aluminum doors, an aluminum rear boot lid, a manually operated soft top, and unique lightweight 20 inch rims.
The Spyder is the only model from the 981 generation to feature an updated faster ratio steering rack which is shared with the 911 Turbo S and this provides the driver with an improved steering response and feel.
Porsche’s Sports Chrono pack came as standard and this lowered 20mm from the ride height which enhanced the stance when sitting on the large 20 inch rims. The Spyder could brake with authority thanks to its 340mm front discs and 330mm rear rotors. Drivers were kept comfortable thanks to the Porsche 918 inspired seats.
It has gone on record, as leading motoring journalists agreed, that this was probably the best Boxster in the range available at the time.
