2006 marked the year that Porsche ruffled the feathers of their hardcore fans by launching their first five-door hatch, inspired by the Porsche 989 concept vehicle from the late 1980s. Though it wasn't all Porsche purists' cup of tea, it made sense with the fact that Porsche could finally take on competitors such as BMW, Jaguar, Maserati and Mercedes in the large, luxurious and fast sector.

The Panamera 970 was considered a full-size luxury car, and it featured a front-mounted engine. In contrast to the 911, the Panamera had a lavish and more spacious interior loaded with tech amenities and clean leather upholstery.

The standard Panamera 970 models came with a 3.6 liter V6 engine, 300 bhp and a top speed of 162 mph. Other first-generation variants included models such as the S Line, as well as the Twin Turbo which featured a V8 engine, and technology such as direct fuel injection, water cooling with thermal management, a variable intake manifold and integrated dry sump lubrication with two-stage extraction of oil. The Twin Turbo used active aerodynamics and also featured an adjustable rear spoiler.

Models from 2013 onwards received a facelift, identified most prominently by new front and rear bumpers. An overall larger version of this model came along in late 2016, as the second-generation Panamera 971. The second-gen revealed a new interior that showcased a redesigned dashboard layout - with touch-sensitive surfaces replacing the array of buttons seen on the previous model - and a centrally mounted tachometer as a nod to the 1955 Porsche 356 A.

In recent years there have been further enhancements and releases of this popular model including hybrid versions, Gran Turismo versions and a range-topping Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo which boasts a top speed of almost 200 mph and launches to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds.

Since its debut, the Panamera has undoubtedly proved itself to be a super sports car for four, offering remarkable performance and comfort.
